ABOUT THE ARTIST

Makenzie L. Coutu
(2007 - Present)

A true Boston native, Makenzie L. Coutu is an undergraduate artist with an unwavering passion for making, sharing, and discussing art. From stories of morality, creation, conflict, nature, and love (and by virtue, heartbreak), she finds inspiration in the most human of places. She is fascinated by biology, ecology, and human psychology. Notable mediums include embroidery and colored pencil, which allow her to capture the detail, texture, color, and most importantly, the depth of her world. Follow along with her wondrous journey.

What makes us human?

“Don’t look to be saved in any one thing, person, machine, or library. Do your own bit of saving” - Ray Bradbury

My fascination with folklore and nature can be explained by the humanity reflected within it. Humans use creation, spirituality, stories, and symbology to mirror aspects of the human experience that are inexplainable in other ways. Mortality, cyclicality, and self-destruction— I mean, what is more human than shouting our humanity from the rooftops just for other humans to hear?

No matter how alone I have felt, how unsure the future has been, and how close I have gotten to extinguishment, my curiosity for the world and my passion for art has remained. Always remember that no matter one’s environment, tools, or technical skill, the act of creation is what makes us human, and no person, machine, or system can take our humanity away from us.
